5/21/2023 0 Comments Tire thumper![]() For years I've had a little souvenir Chicago Cubs bat sitting there, one of those miniature souvenir baseball bats that's skinny as a toothpick and weighs about three ounces. Though this Tire Thumper is certainly not concealed, leaning against the wall right next to my bed. I also find on some discussion forums that if the cops pull you over and find a Tire Thumper in your car, in some localities you could be charged with carrying a concealed weapon, even if you've got tires to be thumped. Oh, and shipping is prohibited to several states, plus all of Canada. In other words, just because it looks like a lead-weighted sawed-off baseball bat, don't you go getting any ideas! Add to that how this Ozark Tire Thumper has a way of turning up for sale on "self-defense" websites. Oh really? What else might it be used as? Skull thumper, maybe? Kneecap thumper? On the package it says, sold for use as a Tire Thumper for checking tire pressure only. Note, stamped on the side of the tire thumper it reads, Use Only As A TIRE THUMPER. Heavy! One might almost suspect this tire thumper of being sold for thumping things other than tires. A sawed-off baseball bat weighted with lead: yes, the center of the "bat" is drilled out and filled with solid lead. You'll notice it looks like nothing so much as a sawed-off baseball bat. Something shady about this tire thumper, though. Tire thumpers are allegedly used by truck drivers to see if their tires are underinflated, you know, give the tire a good sound thump and you can tell by the sound if the tire is low on air. Grooved handle, super strong, leather thong. Here's one that arrived the other day, a genuine Ozark Tire Thumper, 19 inches of cedar, weighted with a solid lead core. Well, I'm on a roll lately, buying obscure but cool items online. The series did get a pachislot spinoff in 2011, the series has cameoed in various other Konami games such as Pixel Puzzle Collection (a Picross-like game with puzzles depicting elements from and music lifted from various Konami games), the BEMANI series (mainly in the form of music remixes), and the second Zone of the Enders game (where it was depicted as a Transforming Mecha) and ports of the games get released from time to time (with the latest being Arcade Archives: Gradius III in 2020), but don't get your hopes up for a new Gradius game anytime soon. After that, Gradius just quietly went off the radar, outside of the aforementioned Otomedius. ![]() The last Gradius video game released was Gradius ReBirth (ironically enough) in 2009. The first Gradius was released in 1985, but in a real-life Retcon, the 1981 game Scramble was declared part of the series in Gradius Galaxies. The power-up scheme was copied by a few other games, such as Apidya and Project X. It is because of Gradius that "Option" is often used to describe a powerup that provides the player with an Attack Drone. The traditional upgrade sequence is Speed Up, Missile, Double (a bidirectional cannon), Laser, Option, and Shield. Gradius's power-up scheme is a staple of the series, and later games provided different upgrade loadouts for different ships, or the ability to customize the loadout before playing. This is in contrast to the system later used by R-Type, where there were multiple types of powerup each with a specific application. This allows the player to tailor their strategy as they play - for example, they may elect to skip a cheap upgrade and hold out for enough tokens to buy a more powerful one. Essentially, the ship is carrying its own shop around with it at all times. ![]() A bar at the bottom of the screen shows which upgrade they can purchase with the tokens they have collected, with the more powerful ones requiring more tokens. The Power-Up scheme in Gradius was particularly innovative for the time - destroying waves of enemies (or special Palette Swap enemies) drops glowing tokens, which the player can exchange at any time for an upgrade. The player controls the Vic Viper, a small starfighter, and faces off against the forces of the Bacterions, and generally destroys everything. Second of all, the note is very cramped, inconvenient, and can’t really contain any useful attachments. First of all, I have to scroll to see the notes section. Also, the fact that they consider “due soon” as “within 24 hours” means that things that won’t be actionable until tomorrow show up now as yellow, even though they aren’t actionable right now. Hell, it’s where I spend at least 2-4 hours every work day, so the email portion (and subsequent task portion) is clean, familiar, and very customizable. How did Todoist stack up to the other two? User Interface and Look-and-Feel Outlookīeing part of the Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook is familiar. Ideally, this should be available no matter what: home, work, in transit, whatever. What I wanted was a nice way to have sub-actions within subprojects, like I can do in OmniFocus on my Mac. Since I often have a lot of different projects going at once, this is completely untenable for me. However, Outlook completely lacks the concept of a project, and the only way of grouping tasks is using categories. Outlook’s task list is useful only in that you can quickly turn emails into tasks using quick actions. all the unique next actions), especially when you include small projects of only 3-5 actions. ![]() However, it gets very cluttered very quickly when you try to use it as a task management tool (i.e. Trello works really well (in my opinion) as a master project list and it even does a passable job as a project management tool for large projects. When I decided to try out Todoist, the primary driver was that I needed a better way to track projects, particularly small projects. I was using OmniFocus on my phone and desktop, outlook on my work laptop (which was, as expected, almost exclusively for work), and trello to piece the rest together, including on my iPad (see pricing section below) and personal laptop. However, as I did more work ( projects done for personal edification) split between my (PC) laptop and (Mac) desktop, my “system” started to fracture. When I bought OmniFocus, I wasn’t that concerned with this, since I wanted to keep my work life and home life separate. One of the core tenants of GTD is that everything is in one system.
